Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay grew up with her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was attracted by the arts. Aunt Denise was a nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to art literature as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught how to express herself through art. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the iconic civil rights demonstration over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time that she spent in the state to stimulate her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for television journalism during her time as a college student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home by a member jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was given, DuVernay determined to make a move in publicity. DuVernay was brought in right after graduating from college as an intern at one of the smaller studios. In this role, she launched her own firm of public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety different lifestyle and promotional networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
